In
1978 the Town of Tonawanda, NY commissioned its then new wastewater treatment
plant. The plant incorporated many new technologies to meet stringent effluent
criteria. The UNOX process is used for BOD5 removal. A combination of chemical
coagulation, solids contact clarifiers, and filtration is used to remove phosphates
to under 0.5 mg/l. The sludge treatment train consists of sludge thickening,
wet oxidation, vacuum filtration dewatering, and incineration. After over twenty
two years of operation all systems are still going strong due to an excellent
staff implementing a good preventive maintenance program on the high quality
equipment provided.
