In the 1970’s the “UNOX” group of UCC Linde pioneered the
development of autothermal aerobic digestion (ATAD) systems using oxygen as
the aeration gas. There were eight systems that were commissioned. These ATAD
systems evolved into the Dual Digestion Systems (DDS) that combined the beneficial
characteristics of both aerobic and anaerobic digestion treatment. In the
1980’s there were six of these systems commissioned. The 503 biosolids
regulations have revived interest in this innovative technology. The benefits
